Food: Make sure there is enough food options for everybody’s palette.

Planning a trip can be a cumbersome process, especially if you are not familiar with the weather or location you plan on traveling to. Weather patterns can be tricky and often times disruptive. In some destinations the weather can change periodically. With this in mind, it is important to have a plan for what you would like to see and do throughout your trip. I guess there should be some type of goal sheet identifying your plans such as beach days, pool days, shopping, hikes, and various attractions that are unique to the area you are visiting. Whatever the case might be, you should plan a little ahead in order to not be disappointed when it is time to check out of your hotel. You do not want to leave your vacation unfulfilled, and the only thing you did was acquire a sunburn at the beach. Moreover, you do not want to feel like you missed out on a list of unique experiences that you and your kids would have really enjoyed.

What to Pack for Your Tropical Vacation?
When it comes to packing, we are often at a loss. If we are traveling by plane, we want to be efficient and bring what we really need. If we are traveling by car, we want to bring a lot more but do not want to be burdened with overpacking. When preparing a packing list, we recommend asking yourself questions about the type of activities you plan on doing, daily temperatures, and climate patterns. Here is a list of ideas and items that might help you plan and execute the ultimate mindful tropical vacation.
When choosing the right sunscreen, you need to be conscientious of the environment and where you plan on traveling to. Some countries and even States have beaches that are located near a coral reef and often require people to be prudent of this factor and only apply sunscreens that do not contain certain chemicals. We discovered this information when we were considering a honeymoon in Hawaii. Hawaii has recently passed strict regulations on what kind of sunscreen can be bought and used on their beaches.
The chemicals to look for are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Studies have shown that oxybenzone and octinoxate are toxic to coral reefs and marine life (3). The chemicals have negatively impacted the marine ecosystem which is a fundamental part of a healthy ocean and planet (3). As we venture to these beautiful places, we do not want to impact the environment negatively or add to more destruction of our precious coral reefs and exotic sea life. Part of the reason we love venturing to these exotic places of the world is to see the beauty these coral reefs and ocean waters give us. The following sunscreens are marine and coral reef safe and are approved in places such as Hawaii and other tropical paradises throughout the world.

Packing for a tropical vacation, we sometimes Fellas we forget how much of the time will be spent in our swimwear. We book these lavish resorts that have incredible pools with lazy rivers and mountains of waterfalls cascading everywhere all of which overlooking a vast body of water but yet we pack one or two swim trunks thinking that will be sufficient. This can pose discomfort when trying to manage activities in the sweltering onslaught of the tropical sunshine. That is why we recommend packing several hats. This is a great way to limit your head’s sun exposure and alleviate some of the access heat that the sun generates, while also providing additional sun protection.
Selecting the right hat should be done with a few considerations such as will this hat endure a lot of sweating when you are out and about in direct sunlight? Will you be able to use this hat freely such as going from the hotel to a possible boat cruise? Some boat rides have increased speed which creates quite the breeze. You do not want to be sitting with your hand on your hat while everyone else is enjoying the ride. You also want a hat that can take a lot of washing and still look like it is brand new. I never put much stock into a beach bag until I met my wife and realized how important and useful a beach bag really is. Let’s face it, the beach is sandy, and sand gets everywhere. You need to have a bag made specifically for the beach to help protect your electronics and other items from exposure to those tiny little sand particles. Having a bag can be helpful as you will have a safe place to place your beach gear such as towels, books, cell phones, and other items you may want to bring with you.
When it comes to the right bag you need to consider looks and functionality. Both are key to having the space you need for your beach essentials and something that represents your unique style.

A day at the beach can be one of the best days of the entire year. Filled with ocean waves, pelicans diving and warm sunshine that never ends. When arriving on your tropical vacation you need to have a good pair of sunglasses to help protect your eyes and not spend your whole trip squinting. Choosing the right pair of sunglasses requires a few variables such as making sure your sunglasses are 100% UV protected as this will make a real difference in regions with powerful UV rays and direct sunlight. According to Dr. Roxana Barad, M.D. “we should think of sunglasses like sunscreen for our eyes” (2).

(Yes, that is correct I was that guy having to rearrange my suitcase to meet the minimum 50lbs. Don’t be that guy/girl).
Heavy jackets are meant for cooler climates. In most tropical places the climate does not drop excessively, so bringing your best fall jacket might not be the most conducive and most likely a waste of space.
Try not to bring all your electronics when traveling, this can become expensive if they are broken and it can be a big distraction, taking away time together. A vacation is meant to be a time to reconnect and take a break from the average day. You will not fully enjoy yourself if you are overloaded with checking emails, statistics, video games, the news, and social media. It will be there when you get back, I promise.

The restaurant itself was tidy, well organized, and clean. The burgers were some of the best tasting burgers that we have ever had. My wife is not a burger lover by any means, and she loved the burgers so much that we ended up ordering from them two other times during our weeklong stay in Keene.
Farmhouse Turkey Burger

Farmhouse Turkey burger is served with cheddar cheese, bacon and a specialty maple mayo that is made inhouse. This delectable burger tastes like the essence of thanksgiving. My wife and I could not get over the flavor profile that this burger had. The farmhouse turkey burger is delicious and a great option for the non-meat lover in your group (would need to place a request for no bacon).
Barnyard Burger

Barnyard Burger is topped with pulled pork, an onion ring, coleslaw, and BBQ sauce. Just like the name insinuates this tasty burger is a barnyard that is grilled to perfection and served piping hot in an old fashion burger wrapper. This was my personal favorite burger. I would recommend upgrading to the Grass Fed Burger patty as this meat is locally sourced from a nearby farm and is exceptionally delicious.
Hand cut Sweet Potato and Regular French Fries

The Hand-Cut Fries and Hand-cut Sweet Potato Fries tasted crispy and fresh. Both fries are hand cut and create that authentic flavor profile that only a hand cut fry can offer. The sweet potato fries were served with maple mayo, which was delicious. The fries were a great addition to our burgers after a long day of exploring.

This Café originated in Manchester, VT in 1988. The café is known for its locally sourced products to create their award-winning menu. The Works Café is a big believer in sustainability. They use compostable hot cups, unbleached paper products, and refillable mugs for the regular patrons to name a few. The Works Café has been awarded several distinctions throughout the years. Some of their accolades include Vermont Business Environmental Partnership, New Hampshire Business Excellence Award, Vermont Green Award and many more.
The cafe uses several farms throughout the New England regions for all of their ingredients. This not only creates a great local partnership with the neighboring business in the region but also keeps the products fresh and up to the standards that Café Works expects.

Autumn harvest veggie Quinoa Bowl is a delicious vegetarian bowl that is made with organic quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes, garbanzos, roasted red onions, baby spinach, toasted almond, and balsamic vinaigrette. This flavorful bowl has all the protein and nutrition you will need to sustain for an all-day nature hike in the nearby surrounding areas.

Beef Barley soup is served with tiny but flavorful beef meatballs, barley, couscous, and kale. This hearty soup is not only delicious but also very plentiful. As you can see from the picture there is a lot of meat and vegetables that make up the bulk of the soup’s composition. Despite the heartiness of the soup, I still felt like I was eating very clean and had an abundance of energy afterwards.

Sesame Ginger Chicken Quinoa Bowl is made with antibiotic free chicken, organic quinoa, roasted broccoli, red cabbage, pineapple mango salsa, scallions, and drizzled with sweet chili sauce. This one-of-a-kind quinoa bowl is delicious, wholesome, and packed with protein. The flavor profile is incredible with such a contrast of flavors yet does not detract from the taste. This bowl has it all and it tastes great.
So, if you are in the mood for a healthier option and would like to try some locally sourced tomatoes, dairy or just one of the best quinoa bowls in the area, then visit this little spot. You will thank us later and so will your health.

This amazing dessert shop is outstanding. They offer a large assortment of goodies such as ice cream, crepes, homemade Belgium waffles, milkshakes, frappes and so much more.
The Yolo Cafés ambience is light and airy with a clean and modern feel. The café has a lot of natural light from the large windows that look onto the side street. Furthermore, they offer indoor and outdoor seating which can be convenient in the warmer months.
My wife and I loved the Vermont maple milkshakes. Looking back at all the items on their menu, I wish I would have paid more visits to the Yolo Café. I found several other items I would have loved to try but then there is always the next time.

Vermont Maple Shake is a delicious milkshake whose dairy is sourced from local farms, giving it an added creamy flavor profile that only local diary milk can produce. You cannot travel to New England in the fall months without indulging in their abundance of maple flavored desserts.
We were greeted with prompt and friendly service, which added to the experience. This is by far the best place to get something sweet, or just grab an ice cream cone and enjoy a pleasant walk around the beautiful streets of downtown Keene.

Prime Roast Coffee Co. is a cozy coffee shop in the heart of downtown Keene. When entering this coffee shop, you will be greeted with a pleasant coffee flavor aroma of locally roasted coffee beans. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with overstuffed couches and chairs throughout the coffee shop. If you are in the mood for a little snack with your coffee, they offer freshly baked pastries each morning. This is a great choice as you can get locally brewed coffee in the heart of downtown.
My wife and I enjoyed their specialty coffee while reveling in the fall air on a nearby street bench. This made for a perfect autumn day as we sat and watched the yellow and orange leaves blow up and down the street from the nearby trees that lined the road.

So, there you have it, all the best places to eat, drink and be merry in Keene, NH. If you find yourself on the road near Keene, NH do yourself a favor and make a stop there. The food is phenomenal, and the town is picturesque. An overall great place for a New England trip.

If you are looking to have easy access to everything in downtown Keene, then the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott would be the best hotel in Keene. The Fairfield Inn & Suites is a great affordable hotel in the heart of the downtown district of Keene, NH. This cozy and centrally located hotel has large guest rooms with windows overlooking the main street and historic district, making this the Best Hotel in Keene.
The hotel is a beautiful 19th century architecture with modern upgrades that will enhance your comfort. The atmosphere is friendly and cozy, with great amenities that only a Fairfield Inn can offer. Moreover, this hotel offers free parking in their reserved section on Wells Street and Church Street parking structure. Although it is not connected to the building it is a very short walk to the parking structure. However, the Main Street in front of the hotel does have meter parking, which can be advantageous when arriving with a lot of luggage.
Amenities
Some of the amenities include free Wi-Fi, gym access, and a free breakfast buffet that is served every morning. Breakfast times can vary; therefore, it is best to inform yourself of the times upon checking into the hotel. The breakfast buffet is served with a coffee bar in a banquet room towards the back of the hotel. Some of the items that were offered for breakfast included muffins, bacon, sausage, eggs, and bagels.
After breakfast, if you feel the need to burn some calories, the hotel gym offers access to treadmills and weights. This can be helpful if you need a quick workout to start your day or end your evening. However, if you prefer to walk outdoors, there are plenty of sidewalks surrounding the hotel and downtown district.

Atmosphere
The hotel lobby is cozy with a fireplace and a small sitting area. The lobby also has a coffee and hot tea bar that offers complimentary water and plastic cups. Both walls in the lobby have a brick façade that adds to the cozy historic ambience of the building. In addition to coffee and tea, the front desk has snacks and bottled water for sale in case you are in a pinch and need a little pick me up.
Our overall experience with the hotel was pleasant. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, making check-in a breeze. Moreover, they were always available to answer questions and assist with towels or other toiletries when needed.
The Room

The rooms are exceptional with their large windows, comfortable pillow top mattresses and updated showers. Yet, even with their modern upgrades they still offer a historic feel that permeates throughout the rooms and building. During our visit, we felt a sense of coziness that only a true quintessential New England town can offer during the fall months. Room Tour
What my wife and I enjoyed the most about the hotel was the central location and its access to everything. Nothing describes the autumn season better than having the ability to walk to a coffee shop first thing in the morning. My wife and I also enjoyed morning and evening walks every day and we took advantage of the nearby restaurants that were only a few blocks away.

The Fairfield Inn & Suites is a great choice if you are visiting Keene or if you are planning a New England trip. The hotel and town are close to several state borders and many other attractions that are renowned throughout the year. The hotel building is aesthetically pleasing, the location is fantastic, and the staff is wonderful. This is the best hotel in Keene and a great option for anyone who is traveling and looking for a comfortable and relaxing experience.

Keene, NH is A Quaint New England City in the beautiful southwestern part of New Hampshire. Keene offers a wealth of great restaurants, bars, shops and is full of culture. The town is extremely walkable with a sidewalk on every street. This makes getting around very easy and accessible. Furthermore, the town is home to two colleges offering a collegiate environment as well as a family environment. Keene is a beautiful town full of culture.
The area known as Keene was part of the original colonies and still has significant sights that date back to the formation of the United States and the early colonial history (1). The downtown still resembles a historic look with its 19th century brick buildings and architecture. These buildings have been repurposed to house small shops and restaurants throughout the historic downtown area (1).

Keene is a great town to stop in for a nice meal, enjoy a nature trail or just spend a few nights. This little town is a wonderful location to explore all the surrounding areas such as Vermont, Maine, and the New Hampshire Lake Region. Each one of the surrounding areas is unique and has its own culture that is worth exploring. My wife and I picked Keene as a launching point for our New England Road trip tour. We selected Keene mainly because it was centrally located, and because the downtown area had a lot of restaurants that were easy to walk to after a long day of driving and exploring.
As a mindful traveler you can enjoy the beautiful sidewalks that line the main street with its abundance of shops and restaurants. Keene offers many nature trails that are especially beautiful during the fall season. So, grab a pumpkin spice latte and have a seat on one of the many benches throughout the downtown region and lets talk about the sight and sounds of a quaint New England city known as Keene.

One thing that I love about small towns is the walkability they provide. I find a good walk can be very beneficial to your mood, health and provide you with cultural insight of the area you are visiting. When my wife and I go for our walks, we like to explore parks, unique architecture, local cuisines, and shops.

Fun Fact
A fun fact worth knowing if you are a fan of the family adventure movie Jumanji (1995), is that parts of the movie were filmed in downtown Keene, NH. If you look at the opening scene and the stampede scene in the movie, both scenes take place in front of their iconic central square.

Keene is a delightful town to explore. They offer many historical sights and parks throughout the downtown region. Some of which have been in existence predating the establishment of the United States as a country. The town is quite the cultural hub with its wide selection of ethnic inspired cuisines and art festivals.

Architecture
As we were exploring the town we walked by a few churches with unique architecture. The photographed churches give a good representation of not only the colonial and European architecture of Keene, NH but of New England in general.
The United Church of Christ

This magnificent church was originally built in 1786 and was consecrated on October 29, 1788 (2). This church had the only church bell in town, which was used as a signal for meetings, celebrations, and the town alarm (2). In 1828, plans for the development of the Central Square were formulated and the church went through its first major reconstruction (2). During this period, it was turned and moved north to its present location (2). The church was brought up to date to mid-19th century standards with the construction of a new spire that stood 130 feet high (2). The spire had a gilt weathervane installed on top of the spire and it is still present today (2).
What I found amazing is not only how beautiful this church really is but how they were able to move the church from one spot to another. This all happened in the mid 1800’s without the assistance of cranes or other forms of modern technology to aid with this undertaking. The church looks beautiful in front of central square, making it the perfect spot.
St. Bernards Church

This elegant catholic church had its first mass on Nov. 20th, 1892, with every seat occupied (3). The church stands tall and is a greeting to all visitors heading towards the downtown district of Keene. St. Bernard’s church is a great representation of the brick architecture that was prevalent in the mid-19th and 20th century. This beautiful church has a solid structure that adds to the distinctive and charming appeal of Keene, NH.
St. James Episcopal Church

St. James Episcopal Church had its first service held on August 21, 1864 (4). This gorgeous church is located on West Street, which is just off Main Street. The stunning gothic inspired architectural church is made of stone with its vibrant and distinctive red doors. St. James Episcopal Church is probably one of the most unique looking as it seems to be the only gothic inspired architecture in the area. This church brings a middle age European style to Keene. I found this church to be my favorite as I am a big fan of gothic architecture.

Central Square is the iconic center piece of the downtown district of Keene, NH. This lovely park is situated at the head of the downtown, on a roundabout. The park features a beautiful white gazebo, a water fountain, and a Civil War Soldier Monument (1). This square is a great place to relax in as the park is surrounded by large trees that offer shade during the summer months, and a beautiful array of colors during the autumn months.
Asheulot Rail Trail & Cheshire Rail Trail

Asheulot Rail Trail is a 23 mile long four-season trail in Keene, NH. (5). This trail is used for biking, hiking, and Nordic skiing in the winter months (5). Most importantly, the trail has a lot of natural shade from the surrounding trees, which can be a nice reprieve from the warmer days in the summer.
When we walked on the trail it was a nice concrete path that cut through the landscape. I enjoyed the natural elements that the trail provided as we walked along it. At some of the starting points, the trail provides a detailed map of where the path goes and the attractions in the area.
The trail was well maintained, and it is visited frequently. This is a great trail to photograph those perfect fall trees and enjoy a nice hot cup of cider. Moreover, it makes for a terrific place to go for a bike ride, or a nice romantic nature walk with a significant other.

Keene is a great town to visit if you are trying to explore the northern part of New England. My wife and I found this town very enjoyable because of the intimacy of the city. The downtown is host to many great options of food which were near our hotel. Furthermore, we were relatively close to Maine, Vermont, and northern New Hampshire. This made it possible to make most of our drives within a few hours.
We found the town to be a little bit livelier at night than a lot of the other New England towns we visited. The livelier nightlife is most likely due to the proximity of colleges in the area. Moreover, Keene has several restaurants that were open late for food, which was helpful for our longer day trips. Overall, Keene, NH is a great place to explore for a reasonable price.

Meredith, NH is a beautiful town situated on the shores of the stunning Lake Winnipesaukee. Lake Winnipesauke is one of the prettiest and most visited lakes in the United States. Known for its beautiful clear water, size, and natural mountainous surroundings, it is a true paradise. My wife and I visited Meredith, NH in the fall. We wanted to have a relaxing experience while enjoying the fall foliage and drinking our pumpkin spice lattes. Visiting this little town has provided us with just that. During our visit we enjoyed the Mountains, Fall Ambience & Lakes in the small town of Meredith, NH. This is a great town to explore and enjoy a meal in a day.
For those who love spending time in lake towns with distant mountains in the backdrop or for those who enjoy the fall ambience, the town of Meredith is a dream come true. Meredith has a small-town charm with an intimate feel and will surely create a calm and relaxed mindset. This quaint New England Lake town is picturesque with beautiful sparkling clear water and distant mountains on the horizon. It makes for a magnificent spot to vacation in the summertime or enjoy the cooler weather in the fall.
This town is the essence of what a lake town should entail. It provides its visitors with restaurants, shops, docks, and water access. You can enjoy a trip to Meredith, NH in the summer or fall as both times of the year offer something special.

Mill Falls Marketplace& Fall Ambience

Mill Falls Marketplace is centrally located in downtown Meredith offering a large parking lot for ease and convenience. The marketplace offers visitors several dining options including a candy store, a Benn & Jerry’s ice cream shop, a bookstore, as well as a wide assortment of clothing stores. This is a great place as it is open year-round and offers visitors a wide range of experiences including a magnificent 40-foot waterfall.
Lees Candy Kitchen

Lee’s Candy Kitchen is a beautiful old-fashioned candy shop located in the shopping center of Mills Falls. This unique candy store offers a wide assortment of chocolates, 100 types of gummy candies and even some old fashion retro candies to enjoy from past generations (3). We visited during the fall season, so we had the opportunity to enjoy some of their fall inspired treats. Since we enjoy our sweets very much, we ended up purchasing some cinnamon flavored malt balls, pumpkin flavored chocolates, and a large peanut butter cup with a beautiful fall leaf shaped marshmallow on top.
We enjoyed the seasonal ambience the store created when we entered their establishment. Lee’s Candy offers not only candy and treats but also jarred jams, New Hampshire maple syrup and an assortment of flavorful NH made pretzels. This is a wonderful place to explore with your children after a nice meal or a day of shopping. At Lee’s Candy Kitchen you can find a sweet treat and bring a little nostalgia to your trip.

Lago is a spectacular waterfront restaurant that has excellent views of Lake Winnipesaukee. This cozy Italian inspired restaurant offers incredible food and renowned service. The dining room is a combination of an old world and Adirondack lakeside atmosphere. The food was absolutely delectable, and the pricing was reasonable. My wife and I ordered the Antipasto as our appetizer and the Calzone and NDUJA flat bread as our entrees.

Antipasto is a true artisanal charcuterie. This starter was delicious and offered an assortment of olives, sliced meats, and some very flavorful cheeses.
Calzone

Calzone is a delicious hand baked dish that is stuffed with spicy Italian sausage, onions, peppers, whipped ricotta, and mozzarella. It is served with a house marinara sauce, and lemon oil arugula prosciutto salad. This dish tastes just as amazing as it looks.
NDUJA and Broccolini flat bread

NDUJA and Broccolini flat bread is a delicious flatbread topped with roasted broccolini, parmesan, feta, and basil. The Flatbread has a Nduja paste that is a spicy spreadable sausage from southern Italy. The Nduja paste is made from pork, fat, herbs, spices and local Calabrian chilies, which adds a spicy flavor and dark color to the spread.

This is a great dinner option as the food, ambience, and service were exceptional. The waterfront view is an added perk that gives that extra special ambience with this restaurant experience. Furthermore, the restaurant is centrally located and close to many hotels. This allows you to take your purchased goodies to the hotel room before heading out to dinner. Then after dinner, you can head out for a mindful walk at the Scenic Clough Park that is located nearby.
Mountains, Lakes & Fall Ambience

Clough Park is a wonderful waterfront park with amazing views of Lake Winnipesaukee. This is a great place to find a nice bench and read a book or to sit and watch as the boats go by. Throughout the park there are several benches that are donated by the families of deceased loved ones. I found this to be very symbolic of the surrounding community as it was their way to share the love the deceased had for the lake and community.
Furthermore, this park would make for a terrific spot for a picnic or to just relax and take some photos as the scenery is amazing. We strolled through the park while we waited for a table at the nearby restaurant and captured some photographs of the beautiful mountains in the distance.

Lake Winnipesaukee

The largest and most revered lake in New Hampshire is Lake Winnipesauke. Located in the foothills of the White Mountains this northern gem is absolutely stunning (4). The spring fed lake with its crystal-clear water makes it a very popular summer vacation spot (4). Furthermore, the lake has several small towns along its shores. Each of these towns has their own unique charm and appeal that offers its visitors an abundance of activities, such as public beaches, shops, restaurants, public boat launches, and even a ferry boat that travels between Wolfeboro, NH and Laconia, NH. This is by far one of the prettiest lakes that we have visited.

Overall, Meredith is a beautiful quaint town that has a lot to offer. This is a true lake town that presents an incredible number of activities and natural beauty. This should be a must see for anyone who is visiting New Hampshire or New England area during the summer or fall, as you will not be disappointed. I sure look forward to our return visit. Treylor Park was the best restaurant on the whole trip and that is saying something as all the places we visited were excellent. This small casual restaurant located on E. Bay Street is one that will impress any palate. The restaurant is a true chef’s workshop as the food is unique, creative and has an abundance of flavor. The food is exceptional and should not to be missed. Every trip to Savannah, GA should find time to enjoy this extraordinary cuisine.

PB& J Wings is a delicious all white meat chicken wings dish that is tossed in a pecan butter sauce and served with a peach sauce for dipping. I was intrigued by the name and delighted by the taste. If you like chicken wings and do not mind a little sweetness in your sauce, this basket of PB&J wings is for you.

The sandwich was amazing and had an exceptional flavor profile that is truly incomparable. I would also like to comment on the presentation of the sandwich. This speaks to the quality of their food and attention to detail.

Dockside Seafood is another great restaurant, located on River Street in Savannah, GA. This restaurant like Treylor Park puts a unique twist on their menu, offering distinctive items with locally added flavor. The restaurant is moderately priced with a concentration on seafood items that are caught off the Georgia coast. This restaurant offers a casual drinking atmosphere for the laid-back traveler.
We went during lunch and enjoyed an appetizer of Dockside puppies served with honey butter. These were probably the best hush puppies I have ever tried with just the right amount of breading. My wife and myself both ordered the Southern Style Pecan Pineapple Sandwich. This was an incredible sandwich as it was incomparable in that they created a chicken salad with pecans and pineapple. A truly remarkable sandwich with a sweet but refreshing flavor profile.
Rocks on the River

This modern design southern inspired restaurant truly projects the local cuisine in its menu. The Rocks on the River restaurant is located right on River Street, inside the first floor of the Bohemian Hotel. A great restaurant with a sophisticated theme and a relaxing atmosphere. This restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
My wife and I enjoyed their Neapolitan Style Low Country Boil Pizza, which captures the unique coastal flavor that Savannah, GA has to offer. This delicious pizza is topped with locally caught shrimp, andouille sausage, caramelized onions, roasted corn, and topped with an Old Bay ranch sauce. A truly delectable experience in every bite.
When visiting Savannah, there will be a lot of temptations around food and treats. We found out that they have some of the best treats and unique food delicacies that we have ever experienced. Of course, a lot of those delicacies are high in calories. However, you cannot travel to such a great place and not indulge in the great food. To ensure we did not miss out, my wife and I shared a lot of our meals and practiced moderation. This was a great money saver, as well as a calorie saver.

Southern Christmas is a charming store located on River Street. It is perfect for a holiday ornament or any kind of Christmas keepsake. This store sells everything Christmas and specializes in unique southern charm. Southern Christmas can offer a great addition for any Christmas holiday decoration. My wife and I have a tradition where we try to find an ornament for our Christmas tree in every place that we visit. However, this little Savannah store had such a variety of unique ornaments, that we could not settle for just one. The store is open year-round and shows how special the holiday season is for the citizens of Savannah, GA. So, be sure to make a stop there and add a little southern style to your holidays.

Christmas on the River is another beautiful store that specializes in Christmas. This quaint and charming store is full of holiday spirit and some unique Christmas items for all your holiday cheer. Located on River Street this adorable little Christmas store will be a great addition to any holiday décor you may be looking for. My wife and I purchased a handmade wooden Advent calendar that has little doors to hide candies and small presents. This was such a wonderful place that I highly recommend stopping by to take a peek at the ambience and items, as they are something to marvel and enjoy.

This renowned candy store is authentic and a southern inspired treasure. The sweets are delectable for anyone who has a sweet tooth or just wants something sweet. The store is cozy and filled with all kinds of goodies from their world-famous pralines to their chocolate Oreos. This place has it all and even smells great upon entering. The store is located on Savannah’s famous River Street and has been a staple to the community for decades. If your stay is short and you find yourself still craving some of their unique delicacies, fear not, they have an online store that will ship straight to your home or business. Enjoy!

Savannah Bee Company is an amazing place that has some of the most unique beauty, wellness, and lifestyle items. The store is located on River Street and is not to be missed. The products sold are derived from honeybee hive ingredients including, beeswax, royal jelly, propolis and honey. The clean and modern layout of the store along with its upbeat and bubbly staff make for a great shopping experience. Their products are fantastic and will be a great addition to your beauty and wellness regimen. My personal favorites are Tupelo Body lotion, Tupelo Honey body wash and Lemongrass body wash. All the items are made with real honey. If you cannot make it to a store or run out of product, they have a wonderful online store that ships to your home with an even better customer service.
City Market Downtown Savannah
City Market is another great location to explore good food, shops and apparel stores. Located between Ellis Square and Franklin Square, this four block radius will appeal to all travelers. This district has a lot of Savanah’s quirky character that we know and love. Many of Savannah’s specialty shops such as art galleries, boutiques and even nightlife can be found in this section of the downtown region (1).
In the evening hours, the City Market breathes new life with local musicians that will serenade your experience with a range of music from Bayou Café to Jazz. In this part of the downtown, we also found the best cookies that are a local product of Georgia. These cookies are something special and will remain in your memory long after your trip is over.

Byrd’s is the finest little cookie shop in all of Georgia. A trip to Savannah, GA is not complete until you have tried some of these delicious locally made Georgia cookies. These small delectable cookies are full of flavor despite their size. My favorites are the Georgia Peach and the Key Lime Coolers. The assortments of cookies come in a bag or can be purchased with a souvenir tin that fits two bags. The tins are neat as they display a painting of various landmarks around Savannah, GA. They would make for a wonderful gift to a friend, loved one, or even for yourself as a personal collectible to remind you of your trip.
The store is clean, and modern with a country theme. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the assortment of cookies they offer is incredible. During holiday seasons Byrd’s also has specialty made cookies that reflect that time of year. Some examples include a Halloween Byrd box, hand decorated rice crispy treats, and a S’more gift package, which contains 12 individually wrapped 3 oz. S’mores. In addition to cookies, they also have biscuits, peanuts, and crackers.

The Hostess City of the South
Savannah, GA known as the “The Hostess City of the South” is sure to delight any traveler who desires a truly unique experience. Located on the eastern side of the state of Georgia this coastal city is full of distinction, history, and some amazing delicacies. The city is located on a bluff above the Savannah River and has an abundance of Candler oak tree lined streets. Furthermore, the parks throughout the downtown area make it a truly charming city.

From the shopping and restaurants on the famous River Street to Forsyth Park. This city has a genuinely distinctive charm about it. Do not miss an opportunity to enjoy a little Southern charm from this enchanting city. I would highly recommend this city as it is probably one of the most walkable cities in the United States. Savannah, GA. was built for a slower more mindful lifestyle with so much to see and enjoy one block at a time.
What makes Savannah, GA so unique is the many parks that have been placed throughout the historic downtown. Their are approximately 22 parks that are approximately 1 square city block in size. The parks are scattered throughout the downtown. Each park has its own unique statue or water fountain that is surrounded by giant oak trees, flower gardens, and paved pathways throughout the parks. These parks are one of the many unique attractions that you will find while spending time in Savannah.
The Famous Places in Savannah
Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park is probably the most iconic attraction in Savannah, GA. This gorgeous well landscaped park is the home to Georgia’s extremely famous water fountain. Named after the 33rd Governor of Georgia, John Forsyth (Georgia Historical Society, 2014). The Park consists of 30 acres of lush gardens and radiating walkways that lead to the magnificent water fountain on the north end of the park. The southern end has a Confederate War monument topped with a bronze soldier. The park is lined with Candler Oak trees offering an abundance of shade and tranquility. This is a must see because it is a truly perfect photo opportunity or a tranquil stroll through one of Americas most amorous parks (6).
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

This 143-year-old church is Savannah’s first Parish. The parish was originally established to accommodate a growing Catholic population. In 2020 his Holiness Pope Francis, through the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, issued a decree granting the church the title of Minor Basilica which is now referred to as the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. There are only 87 churches and 18 cathedrals in the United Stated that carry this name. The Minor basilicas churches are traditionally named because of their antiquity, dignity, historical value, architectural and artists worth, and the significant value it brings to worship (1).
Waterfront District on River Street

The waterfront district is an iconic evolution of history starting once as a cotton warehouse district that has been transformed into the elaborate tourist destination it is today. The original century old buildings on River Street have been transformed into luxurious shops, unique dining restaurants, and boutique hotels. The River Street district is located on the Savannah River, giving tourists an up close and personal experience with some of the largest ships from around the world. Due to its location Savannah is one of the busiest ports in the United States. The River Street section is not incredibly large so a nice afternoon should give you plenty of time to enjoy all that it has to offer (2).

Savannah Historic District

The historic district is a non-commercial part of town that has large sidewalks and tree lined streets giving an abundance of shade throughout the warm months. This is the place where most of the unique and historic southern architecture can be seen in the homes and townhouses that line the streets. Many famous historical figures have frequented these roads and lived in the homes in this part of the city. A beautiful experience that transports you to a simpler time when beauty and nature were the defining qualities of a neighborhood.

Historical Architecture
Savannah is filled with unique architecture that is historical in nature and reminds us of a bygone era. The streets in the Historic districts are lined with some of the most culturally unique homes that still have that Old Southern Charm appeal to them. The following is a collection of notable homes we were able to capture on our journey to the Hostess City.
Mills B. Lane House

The Mills B. Lane home which was constructed in 1908 for a banking executive. This 14,500 square foot charmer is located at 26 E Gaston Street across from the iconic Forsyth Park. The house consists of 6 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. The Mills house is an architectural masterpiece of its time with wrought iron fences enclosing the property and a stately brick façade. The Mills House is a perfect blend of historic southern charm and classic Savannah style (3).
Armstrong House

This 100-year-old four story home was built to model the Italian Renaissance era and is an architectural marvel not to be missed. Located in the Historic District on 447 Bull Street in between two Savannah squares (historical parks that offer shade and seating and a historical monument). The house has a beautiful wrought iron fence that encompasses the home and is professionally landscaped. Filled with over 100 years of history it currently houses one of Georgia’s most prestigious law firms. This home was also featured in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997). (4)
Il Porcellino

Il Porcellino, the bronze wild boar of Florence, Italy. This statue I found to be interesting, unique and a little grotesque as it looks like a boar salivating over something. The statue is a water feature in the side garden of the Armstrong house. The fountain is made of Hellenistic era marble and the artist who created the fountain was Pietro Tacca in 1620-1633.
Metts Mansion 1903

This turn of the century home was built in 1903 overlooking the famous Forsyth Park. The white pillars that highlight the front porch give off a distinguished look, a characteristic of power and allure. The beautiful wrought iron balconies and crest emblem on the walls give charm and grace, a characteristic of the Old South and simpler times. This prestigious home is one not to miss as it is a true jewel of the historic district in Savannah.
Famous City Squares

Famous for its iconic city squares and parks which gives Savannah, GA the title of one of the most walkable cities in the United States. Each park is unique with history and prominence. They are truly a place of beauty and historical notoriety for anyone who adorns their presence.
Monterey Square

Monterey Square is one of Savannah’s many square parks. This Park is known for its most notable white marble sculptor of Casimir Pulaski, a towering monument in the middle of the square. Located off the famous Bull Street and next to the Mercer Williams house made famous by the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997). This is a great place to just sit and relax while you sip on some cool refreshing southern iced tea.
Lafayette Square

Lafayette Square is located off the corner of St. John the Baptiste cathedral. This quaint park has a small fountain in the middle that was designed in 1873 to honor the Marquis De Lafayette, a French general under George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. The Park is quiet and peaceful with the sounds of water cascading down the fountain tiers serenading the park visitors (5).
Madison Square

This famous square is home to the monument of Sgt. William Jasper, an American soldier in the Revolutionary War. The monument depicts Sgt. Jasper holding his bullet wound with his right hand while standing tall and carrying the colors of his regiment above his head. His bravery was later honored with this sculpture of him. The Square was named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison.

This is a great opportunity to really get an idea of the culture and to make memories. A trip to a restaurant, deli, or even ice cream parlor is an opportunity to gather as a family, group, or couple and to have moments while enjoying a delicious meal or treat. This article will discuss where to find the best restaurants in Venice, Florida and where you can create those enjoyable memories.
Many times, the restaurants we visit become much more than just a place to eat, but a destination point that can last years and bring back some of the fondest of memories for you and the people you were with.
Venice, Florida has several great places to dine at or enjoy a treat and make those lasting memories that we can cherish for a lifetime. Furthermore, Venice offers a sophisticated but enjoyable option for all travelers alike. So, with that being said, let us take a look at some of what Venice has to offer for the foodie in all of us.
Best Breakfast Restaurant
Croissant & Co.

This amazing French bakery is located on Venice Avenue in the historic Venice downtown area. The bakery is open Monday through Sunday and offers products that are made in-house daily (1). Furthermore, this bakery works with the freshest ingredient and keeps with the authentic French techniques (1). Moreover, their products do not contain preservatives or artificial ingredients (1).

My wife and I were on a mission for a croissant, and did we hit the mother-load. Not only did they have croissants, but many other tasty treats such as Baguettes, Fruit Tarts, and Macarons. We tried the croissants, and they were delicious with a resemblance of a true French croissant. In addition to the croissant, we enjoyed their homemade quiche and a fresh fruit cup. But wait, we did not stop there. We also had to try those succulent delicious looking mini yule logs.

The bakery had a nice variety of treats that looked delicious. Their glass cases ranged from chocolate flavored cake slices to fruit flavored pastries and treats. So, if you suffer from sweet tooth, this place is worth visiting.

The croissant had a flakey outer shell with a warm soft center that did not need to be accompanied with any jams or butter, as it was delicious all by itself. Of course, if you prefer some jam or butter on your croissant, you go right ahead.

The Quiche was exceptional and had a nice crust. It had the right amount of crunch and the perfect amount of soft texture. The quiche contained onions, and prosciutto. This was one of the best quiches I have ever had, and I am a man who likes his quiche. Moreover, the fruit cup was a very nice complement that added a fresh and revitalizing flavor to an exceptional dish.

In addition, to an amazing breakfast option. The overall ambience was calm, with gentle lights and smells of coffee and fresh bread that permeated throughout the establishment. Although the bakery was small and filled up fast with loyal patrons, the place had a very cozy feel to it. You can see pride in ownership by how clean, and well-appointed the decorations were throughout the bakery. Overall, the bakery was a great experience with a happy upbeat staff.
Best Lunch Restaurant
ABBY’s on Miami

Abby’s on Miami is a great spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is located right in the middle of the historic downtown. This is an upscale casual dining restaurant that provides indoor and outdoor seating. Abby’s has been in the community for over 25 years and has become a staple in the downtown district. This little spot provides an enjoyable and relaxing environment that has a great selection of food that will appeal to most travelers and vacationers.
Abby’s on Miami is known for its seafood selection and features locally caught fish that is fresh off the boat when available. Abby’s outdoor seating is the best in the city as it allows for some shade from the sun, but yet you still feel connected to the vibrancy of the city. The outdoor seating also provides some privacy from the street traffic.

This sandwich is served with a large portion of flounder that is breaded and fried. It is served on a toasted brioche roll with lettuce, tomato, and a side of homemade tartar sauce. Also, each sandwich is served with a choice of fries, coleslaw, or potato salad. As you can see from the picture, we chose fries. They were thick, crunchy, and lightly salted.
Abby’s Burger

This delicious burger starts off with a ½ pound of ground chuck cooked to your liking. The burger is served with lettuce, tomato, and onion. Each sandwich is also served with a choice of fries, coleslaw, or potato salad.
Best Ice Cream Shop

If you are in the mood for a cold treat, then Venice Avenue Creamery has got you covered. All their ice cream and yogurt are homemade using locally sourced dairy (2). The Creamery is family owned and has been in the Venice community for over three decades. Furthermore, the creamery is actively involved in the community and is featured at many of the locally hosted events with their flavorful ice cream. Below are the cups of ice-cream that we tried during our trip to Venice Avenue Creamery.

The restaurants that we visited were confined to Venice Island and the historic downtown district. We rated restaurants on a wide variety of characteristics such as convenience to other places of interests, location, ambience, food, quality of service and presentation, as well as other important aspects that we believe would enhance your dining experience.
