How to get started in 6 moderately easy steps

Step 1: Select a Domain Name

To get on the road to building your website, a better life and dive into those creative juices you have been suppressing for far too long is to come up with a catchy domain name.

Choosing a domain name is important as it will be the name of your website. You can use Google or Hostinger to register your domain name. Make sure you pick something that identifies what your website is about, is catchy and easy to recognize.

You want a name that will withstand the test of time and be able to grow with you as your website develops. Basically, pick a name that you will not regret in a few years. After you have carefully picked the perfect name that will not only represent you but the subject matter on your website, you will also need to make sure that it is available. This can be done by searching domain names when registering your name in Google or Hostinger.

When I was creating my website, I ran into problems finding a name. I would come up with great names, but they were not available. Eventually, I started playing around with words that I wanted to use that best represented my website, such as “Mindful Travels,” “Traveling to Food,” and “A Mindful Traveler,” you get the point. I interchanged words around until I came up with Traveling Mindfully. The name captures the topic of my blog, and it is easy to remember.

Step 2: Choose your Hosting Platform

The next step is to choose your Hosting platform. Hostinger will prompt you into picking a hosting package. Hostinger offers various package options including a website builder which will give you confidence and ease when you are designing and creating your website. There are currently 4 different packages available to choose from. The packages can be purchased for 12 months, 24 months, 36 month or 48 months.

I would recommend doing the 48 months as building, launching, and creating content can take time and effort. I chose the Business Web Hosting since it offered free Automated Backups, which is great for when you update, or when your website goes down (which is rare). The automated backup service keeps records of your website’s content, such as pictures, texts, videos etc. This service will easily restore your website to a previous point in time in the event of a crash or mistake in editing. This worked wonders for me as I made a lot of mistakes. My advice would be to be patient with yourself and allow yourself time to get acclimated.

Step 3: Create and Access your Hostinger Account

When you log into your Hostinger account you will be able to access WordPress and begin building your website. Before you begin building your website you will have the option to create an email address that will be on the main screen. This can be advantageous as it gives you more of a professional and polished appearance. The email address will be linked to your website name such as “Jane.Doe@websitename.com.”

Depending on what plan you purchase with Hostinger you might be able to have up to five emails addresses associated with your website. This is great if you plan on having employees or multiple people associated with your website. When you set up your email, they will ask you if you want the paid options, which are much nicer and more conducive. However, they do offer a free version that works just as well. I chose the free version because of my limited budget, and it works for me.

Step 4: Selecting a Theme

The next step takes place when you log into Hostinger where you will be prompted to log into your WordPress. This is where all the magic happens. When you begin building your site the first decision you will need to make will be what theme you would like to use for your website.

A theme is similar to a power point presentation and shows you what the layout of your website will look like. This can be a lengthy process as there are a lot of themes and many of them look great and will most likely meet your vision. Fear not though, you will know when you find the one that suits your needs. You can always change your theme later if you find a better one or want to upgrade to a more premium theme selection. I recommend going into this selection process with an open mind and trying to visualize which theme will play to your creativity and vision.

Step 5: Creating your Landing Page

The first page you will create will be a landing page. This is the main page that visitors will see when they enter your website. From the landing page they can interact with your posts and other pages. You want to make this page interesting, attention grabbing and easy to navigate as this will determine your bounce rate (the amount of time visitors spend on your website and landing page and never explore any other part of your website). You can also create a menu for your landing page (more on that later).

Step 6: Creating your Content

After you have selected your theme and landing page, you can begin to work on your content from the dashboard. The dashboard is the backend for your website. The backend of the website is where you can create all the content that will be featured in your site. Take your time with this as you can create pages and posts and not have to publish them right away. I worked out of the backend of my website for several months before I published and launched my site.

As you are putting together your masterpiece, I would encourage you to explore the block editor as it makes life much easier. WordPress has a large assortment of blocks that allows you to insert paragraphs, quotes, images, videos, and much more. This is only a fraction of what WordPress can do for you.
